The Challenge

Played on fields and courts, diamonds and ovals. Surrounded by stadiums of concrete and steel filled with marching bands and cheerleaders, flags and pompons, and cheers ... for Southern Miss. Athletes testing each other's strength, agility, and heart. Touchdowns and aces, missed putts and penalties. Spectators hanging on to every shot, every volley, every pitch. And every athlete and fan filled with the knowledge that they possess something many desire but few can claim...they are Golden Eagles!

Today, more than ever before, Southern Miss is poised to become a national power in intercollegiate athletics. Conference USA championships, All-Americans, College World Series berths, and appearances in postseason play by a number of our squads have become the norm in recent years. And success has carried beyond the playing fields, as Golden-Eagle athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Student-athletes graduate and a higher rate than the regular student body and consistently rank among the best academically in the C-USA. Through these accomplishments, student-athletes have raised the bar and established Southern Miss as one of the premier opportunities in the country for potential student-athletes. They are meeting the challenge.

To ensure that they can continue to excel, we must also meet a challenge. Successful programs are built on more than talented players and coaches. The cost of continued progress must also be measured in dollars and cents. In addition to providing resources and facilities that maximize each individual's athletic ability, the Southern Miss athletic department is committed to keeping each student-athlete on an academic track that enhances the educational experience and results in graduation. To do this, we must offer a full range of academic services and programs. In addition, to stay competitive on the field, we must be able to offer the maximum number of scholarships allowable under NCAA guidelines. This means covering costs for nearly 350 athletes receiving financial aid in our Division I sports, a figure that now exceeds $2,400,000. Eagle Club donations account for the largest part of scholarship dollars, but we still have far a long way to go.
