Dr. Dennis Phillips begins his 11th season as the Faculty Athletic Representative to the department. Phillips provides input to the athletics department in relation to budgetary matters, policy and governance and compliance, also serves as the voice of the faculty on all matters relating to intercollegiate athletics.
Phillips, a professor in the University's school of Human Performance and Recreation came to Southern Miss in 1992 as a Tenured Associate Professor. In 1999, he added the title of Graduate Coordinator for the school.
Prior to Southern Miss, he coordinated solicitation for the Volleyball Hall of Fame for a year and was the Assistant Director of Athletics at Springfield College for three years from 1987 to 1990. From 1978 to 1987, Phillips was the Basketball Administrator at Southwest Baptist University while also serving as a Tenured Assistant Professor of Health, Physical Education. A two-year stint as an admission counselor and Director of Intramurals and Physical Education teacher at Mount Marty College followed a two-year stop as a Physical Education and History teacher.
Phillips earned his doctorate at Springfield College in 1990 and his master's at Whitworth College in 1976. He earned his bachelor's at Pacific Lutheran in 1973.
