Southern Miss Athletics November 14, 1981: Southern Miss 58, Florida State 14 - Win moves Eagles to No. 8

Playing in front of the ABC-TV cameras as well as Tangerine Bowl officials, who indicated they would be interested in the winner of the contest, the Golden Eagles, now No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 10 in the UPI rankings, met Florida State on Nov. 14, 1981, in Tallahassee. The Eagles scored on their first seven possessions and trounced the Seminoles, who had beaten Ohio State and Notre Dame on the road and had been ranked No. 20 by the AP, 58-14. USM rushed for 368 yards and passed for an additional 128, while the Nasty Bunch limited the Seminoles to 290 total yards and held Florida State scoreless until the outcome had long been decided. "It was a great effort from our football team," head coach Bobby Collins said after the game. "It seems like week after week we have got something to prove. They had to prove it again today, and they did." The AP rankings moved the Golden Eagles up to No. 9, while the UPI poll had them at No. 8. The Eagles were now 8-0-1 and produced another of the Greatest Games in Southern Miss Football.
